Mobile Intensive Care Units

Spirit EMS stands out for its unique approach to critical care transportation by utilizing Mobile Intensive Care Units (MICU). These units are staffed with a team of highly trained professionals, including a Registered Nurse, Paramedic, and an EMT who also serves as the driver.

The MICU serves two primary functions: during severe weather conditions that make air ambulance flights unsafe, or when a patient requires immediate, specialized care that an air ambulance might not be able to provide due to the high cost, but is medically necessary. This approach offers significant cost savings for both the patient and their insurance provider.

The MICU is equipped to handle a wide range of critical care procedures, including invasive hemodynamic monitoring, arterial line monitoring, use of intra-aortic balloon pumps, administering chemotherapy, and managing complex medication regimens. It is always prepared with advanced airway devices, a sophisticated ventilator capable of various ventilator modes, and additional critical care transport monitoring along with a variety of pharmacologic agents.

Our team is highly trained and capable of managing critically ill patients. The MICU is also called upon for a variety of situations, including patients with multiple IV lines, ongoing blood transfusions, recent intubations, unstable hemodynamics, complex medical conditions, trauma patients with multiple injuries, and pediatric patients in need of advanced life support or medical procedures. The MICU is used most often for high
acuity patients for transfers between hospitals.
