Mobile Intensive Care Units  (MICU)

Spirit Medical Transport is special in the way it offers critical care transports through the staffing of a Mobile Intensive Care Unit. MICU units are staffed with a Registered Nurse, Paramedic, both specially trained in critical care services, as well as an EMT who normally functions as the driver of this specialty vehicle. A MICU’s purpose is two-fold  used during inclement weather conditions that prohibit the safe flight of an air ambulance or in cases where the patient is in need of acute care services which require the specialized training of a critical care nurse, yet the exorbitant expense of an air ambulance is not deemed medically appropriate. The use of a MICU comes at a substantial cost savings to both the patient and their respective insurer.

MICU transports involve invasive hemodynamic monitoring wedge pressure monitoring, arterial line monitoring, intra-aortic balloon pumps, actively transfusing chemotherapy, or complex pharmacologic patients.  The unit is always equipped with advanced airway devices, a complex ventilator capable of all vent modes, as well as BIPAP, CPAP, IV pumps, critical care transport monitor / defibrillator, advanced pharmacologic agents including drugs for rapid sequence intubation, advanced vasopressors sedatives, and many others.. Our employees are trained to the highest levels and are able to care for critical of patients.

MICU transports also occur when a patient has multiple medication drips hanging, has blood transfusing, was a recent intubation, is hemodynamically unstable, has a complex medical condition, is a trauma patient with multiple injuries, or pediatric patients requiring advanced life support, chest tubes, central lines, or those patients with a high potential to deteriorate enroute.

MICU services are generally used to transport from a hospital to hospital setting. Nonetheless, this critical care vehicle is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days-a-week, 365 days-a-year and is available for response to emergency scenes whenever the need may arise.
