Advanced Life Support ambulances are staffed by either a Paramedic or EMT-Advanced, depending on the medical condition of the patient and their respective medical needs at the time of transport. Paramedic staffed ambulances can handle transporting patients on a Mechanical Ventilator, do Surgical Cricothyrotomy, Advanced Airway management, 12 Lead EKG Monitoring, Intraosseous Needle Placement, and External Pacing among other specialty procedures. EMT-Advanced crews are able to handle cardiac monitoring, infusion of normal saline, and administer a host of non-cardiac related medications should the need arise in addition to monitoring cardiac heart rhythms.
